Technology

The technology utilized at Southlands is deeply woven into the educational process as an integral part of students’ academic experience. Technologies are specifically chosen that help increase student motivation and learning, facilitate student-centered learning environments, prepare students for today’s technological age, promote collaborative learning experiences, and expand students’ ability to interact with curriculum. In response to the impact on student performance of successful research-based instructional strategies, Southlands has implemented the following technologies in the classroom.

Interactive Whiteboards
Combining the simplicity of a whiteboard with the power of a computer, the Interactive Whiteboard enables teachers to deliver dynamic lessons, write notes in digital ink, and save their work as they present material to the class. This technology transforms the classroom into a learning environment where students are able to interact with the curriculum as a group and have hands on input as they explore the material being taught.

iPads
iPads are opening up an entirely new dimension for learning. With iPads, curriculum comes to life and students can engage and interact with it in ways that were not previously possible. In addition, many education apps are taking new and fun approaches to teaching content to students.

Apple TV
Apple TV helps to maximize the mobility and functionality of iDevices inside the classroom. By using Apple’s airplay technology, we can show an interactive education application on the iPad and display it onto a projector for our students to see, allow students to collaboratively engage with educational applications, and even record lectures for students to review once they go home.
ELMO
These devices are high-resolution document cameras that allow teachers to project physical objects onto a screen for students to view. Anything from a simple sheet of paper to an entire lab demonstration can be used in conjunction with these devices.
Edline
Edline is an online communications portal that helps teachers, students, and parents stay connected outside of the classroom. This service allows our students and parents to check grades, download homework, and read the class schedule. This helps to keep parents involved in the learning process and to extend learning outside of the classroom.
Moodle
Moodle is a Learning Management System (LMS) that has been customized to have the look and feel of Southlands in order to facilitate the learning process in a virtual environment. It enables us to create online learning opportunities for students. Through this system, Southlands has developed it’s own online curriculum that mirrors the high academic standards of it’s on-campus classes.
Digital Curriculum
Southlands utilizes modern curriculum that includes digital components. These advances in curriculum provide students with interactive animations of academic concepts, interactive quiz and homework activities, and media support that helps students make real life connections.
